Holiday Drink Recipes from the Chicken

‘Tis the season, folks! If there’s one thing we at Dirt Cheap know, it’s that the holidays go down much more smoothly when you have a drink in (at least one) hand. While many people enjoy the same beverages they drink throughout the year, others enjoy indulging in seasonal concoctions, such as mulled wine, spiked eggnog, and hot toddies. This blog post highlights several recipes that are sure to make your holidays merry and bright. Turn on some classic Bing Crosby, don your ugliest Christmas sweater, and put your mixology skills to the test.

Wassail:  Here is a toasty beverage that combines spiced apple cider with warming brandy.  The ingredients are as follows:

  • 1 gallon of apple cider
  • 6-8 cinnamon sticks
  • 1 lemon, sliced
  • 1 orange, sliced
  • 1 tbsp cloves
  • 1 tbsp allspice
  • 1 gallon of white wine
  • 2 cups of rum

Directions: Simmer on low heat everything except the wine and rum for 1-2 hours. Add the remaining ingredients and serve. Remember to serve this drink hot, but not too hot – otherwise the alcohol will evaporate, leaving you with a still-delicious, albeit less cheery, wassail.

Eggnog:  This classic beverage, like wassail, can be made with or without alcohol. Therefore, anyone underage can easily partake in the festivities (just make sure to pour their servings before the alcohol is added).

  • 12 egg yolks
  • 5 whole cloves
  • 4 cups whole milk
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1½ cup sugar
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tsp vanilla
  • ½ tsp grated nutmeg
  • 1 cup bourbon
  • 1 cup cognac

In a saucepan, combine the milk, vanilla, cinnamon, salt, and cloves. Heat on low until the mixture boils (about 5 minutes). Separately, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar until fluffy. Slowly add the hot milk and continue to whisk. Pour the new mixture back into the saucepan and cook over medium heat. Stir constantly until thick, about 3-4 minutes, but do not allow the content to boil. Drain the mixture of the cloves and allow the liquid to cool for an hour. Finally, add the bourbon, cognac, and nutmeg. Stir. Refrigerate overnight. This drink is so worth the wait!

Mulled Wine: Nothing feels quite as cozy as sipping a warm cup of mulled wine by the fire. A popular choice for parties, this tasty, surprisingly sweet beverage truly encapsulates the spirit of Christmas. Learn how to make this version below:

  • 2 oranges
  • 2 bottles of red wine
  • 2 bottles of white wine
  • 1 piece of ginger (3 inches, peeled and sliced)
  • 5 cinnamon sticks
  • 2/3 teaspoon ground cloves
  • ½ cup brown sugar

Carefully peel the zest from the oranges in strips and set it aside. Juice the oranges into a large pot with a thick bottom. Add the wine, orange zest, ginger, cinnamon strips, cinnamon sticks, cloves, and brown sugar. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Cover the pot and heat on medium-high heat for roughly an hour to fully bring out the flavors.  Strain the liquid and serve hot. Do not heat for too long, as the alcohol will eventually evaporate from the mixture.
